Hanging Baskets – Autumn

Hanging baskets don’t last for ever, but they can last long into winter and even next spring if you act now. If you take apart those baskets you planted so lovingly back in May and start all over again it is just as easy to plant up autumn baskets.

You will need to act quickly as the growth rate will be slowing down as temperatures drop and the nights draw in and your new plants will need to get established.

Choose winter pansies, primroses, cyclamen and polyanthus for a great autumn display. But also think about spring and between them tuck in plenty of dwarf bulbs, along with heathers, ivy and the odd dwarf conifer or two.

Making up autumn hanging baskets.

  • The ideal size is 35cm (14ins), the smaller ones have less impact and dry out too quickly, particularly in chilly winds.
  • The frame will need a fibre or cardboard liner filled with multi-purpose compost.
  • Use new compost and discard the nutrient-drained spring soil.
  • Mix some water-retaining gel and some fertiliser granules in with it, then add the plants, always being aware of which is going to need most space.
  • Water them in well and that’s it.
