Planting Bulbs For Spring & Summer

Gardening
Flower Bulbs

This is a great time of year to start thinking about planting bulbs for spring colour. They can be planted in pots or out in your garden and the great thing about perennial flower bulbs is that they produce flowers year after year. Hyacinth are fragrant, Spring flowering bulbs ideal for bedding, pots or even forced flowering. They will provide stunning blooms wherever you choose to grow them.

In the autumn plant hearty bulbs like tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and crocuses that will bloom the following spring. Spring is best time to plant tender bulbs like irises, gladiolus and elephant ears for a great display during the summer. Blooms last about 3 – 4 weeks once they bloom. However flowers like elephant ears that are planted for foliage will last all season long.

Bedding Hyacinths should not require support but they are still large enough to offer a great show of colour in Spring from March to April.

  • Plan a design, whether it be a formal display along pathways or scatter throughout landscape for a more natural look. Think about what colours work the best as well.

  • Plant the bulbs at the proper depth, the general rule of thumb is to plant 2 – 3 times as deep as the length of the bulb. Plant nose side up and cover with soil and about 2″ of mulch in the autumn.
  • Water them in and that’s it.
  • For colder climates, you may want to dig up and store the bulbs over the winter
