Cut back long shoots of creepers and climbers that have gone a bit too far to avoid blocked gutters.
If you didn’t cut back your Lady’s Mantle (Alchemilla mollis) last month this is the time to remove old flowers now before its seed gets everywhere.
Gradually bend new upward-reaching shoots of climbing roses gently into more horizontal positions and secure them.
Many shrubs have grown apace during this warm, damp summer, so in shady gardens cut back growth that falls over or shades walkways.
This is a good time to plant cloves of garlic for harvesting early next summer. Remember to plant them 4in deep and 7in apart.
