A low growing, tough perennial from the Caucasus, Alchemilla mollis is an excellent ground cover plant and useful for difficult situations such as dry shade. Its fresh looking, matt-green leaves are topped by a frothy mass of tiny yellow-green flowers from midsummer to late August. Lady’s Mantle, or Alchemilla, is a low-growing perennial that is an ideal plant for ground cover.
There are very few plants that have green flowers but Lady’s Mantle, or Alchemilla does. Often overlooked by gardeners in search of something more exciting, the unpretentious appearance of Lady’s Mantle makes it extremely useful all round the garden. Alchemilla mollis is a charming little plant with frothy lime-green flowers in early summer and neatly pleated apple-green, fan-shaped leaves which persist all season.

Growing Tips

  • Alchemilla Mollis can be refreshed if they look tired after a hot dry summer by cutting the plants back hard.
  • Grow Lady’s Mantle plants in full sun or part shade.
  • Grow as ground cover in shade or beneath roses.
  • If allowed to self-seed into gravel or cracks between paving, the resulting seedlings are very drought tolerant.
