Gardening Tips And Tricks

Gardening is good for you and the environment and there are ways to help to make things less of a chore. In this video you’ll find 14 useful tips to make growing vegetables and gardening easier. From how to keep dirt out of your fingernails while gardening, to why you should use cinnamon with your young plants, to how to keep your trimmer string from jamming.

Here are some tips to get you well on your way to being a successful gardener.

  • Pine can make surprisingly great mulch. Many types of plants thrive in soil that has high acid levels. When you have plants like this, nothing is easier than to gather pine needles for your beds. Using several inches of needles to cover your beds provides acid for the soil as they begin to decompose.
  • Try using coffee grounds on the soil. Coffee grounds are full of nitrogenous nutrients that growing plants need. Nitrogen is a nutrient that will help your plants grow taller and bloom faster, so use those coffee grounds, extra compost, or diluted urea to make this happen.
  • Looking for a natural way to kill weeds in your garden? You can easily control weeds by using layered sheets of newspaper. Weeds require sunlight to grow. They will suffocate and die if you cover them with newpapers. Newspapers also break down over time, becoming part of your compost. You can then add a mulch layer right on top so that it looks more attractive.
  • If slugs are an issue in your garden, a beer trap can make them go away. Dig a hole just deep enough for a glass jar to be placed in it while the jar still has its rim in line with the surface of the ground. Fill it with beer to about one inch below the top of the jar. Slugs are attracted by the beer and won’t be able to exit the jar once they enter.
