Choosing A Hydrangea

Gardening
Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas love partial sun and consistently moist soil. To get your hydrangeas ready for the spring we have some useful tips. If you want to change the colour of the blooms add aluminum sulfate for blue and hydrated lime for pink! A little fertilizer and some light pruning and you are ready to go.

When To Prune Your Hydrangeas?

Hydrangeas fall into two categories. Those that flower on new wood, and those that flower on old wood.

However to make matters worse there are those that bloom on old wood and new wood.

  • If your hydrangeas really need pruning, prune them right after they finish blooming.
  • It doesn’t really matter if they flower on old wood or new wood. Prune them right after they bloom and unless you are cutting your plants back really hard, you should still leave plenty of flower buds for next year.
  • It’s really the only window of time that you have. If you wait any longer you are sure to cut off flower buds for next year.
